MONSOON: A SUMMON TO INFECTIONS

 

  • DEADLY HEPATITIS A

This deadly disease affecting the liver is a viral infection caused by consuming infected food and/or water. Hepatitis i.e. liver inflammation demands a well balanced and anti-inflammatory diet. Refrain the consumption of sugary and refined carbohydrates that lead to inflammation. Hydration and rest are equally essential, alongwith diet. Peppermint oil is helpful in boosting energy and relieving from nausea, a common symptom. Ginger tea is also vital to detoxify our system & boost immunity. Beetroots promote regeneration of liver cells. Detoxifying properties of water chestnut, sweet potato and sugarcane juice are markedly essential in treatment.

  • DENGUE

This most common monsoon fever transmitted by Aedes mosquito has no vaccine for prevention but it can be avoided by not letting the water stand as this stagnant water is the most favourable breeding place for mosquitoes. This fever markedly reduces the blood platelet count, accompanied by recurrent episodes of temperature rise & fall. Bitter papaya juice and kiwi are some of the excellent sources to raise the platelet count. Along with this, the damage caused can be healed by immunity boosting foods; among these orange juice can do wonders by increasing the antibodies and aiding digestion.

  • MALARIA

This fever is caused by Anopheles mosquito breeding in stagnant water.

Cinnamaldehyde in cinnamon has antiparasitic properties. Orange juice loaded with Vitamin C boosts up the immune system. Gingerol in ginger is another versatile option to treat malaria due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Ayurvedic medicine suggests the usage of Holy Basil to alleviate the symptoms of malaria. Fever, chills and nausea, a few common symptoms of malaria are relieved by chamomile tea. Adding on , fenugreek seeds also add to this list. 

  • CHOLERA

It is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhoea, which may progress to dehydration and eventually death. Its causative factors being consumption of contaminated food & water with Vibrio cholerae. Treating dehydration is the first priority by consuming boiled water and ORS. One effective treatment is ingesting probiotic yogurt that is loaded with healthy bacteria aiding digestion & killing the bacteria causing cholera. Ginger & lemon, being anti-bacterial are also beneficial. Eugenol present in cloves destroys intestinal bacteria that causes/worsens diarrhoea. Zinc rich foods such as spinach,sesame seeds, brown rice, garlic are also crucial. In Ayurvedic medicine,turmeric and fenugreek seeds are often recommended for treating diarrhoea, a common symptom of cholera.

  •    VIRAL INFECTIONS

These easily contagious infection, transmittible by oral/sexual route are manifested by extreme fatigue, running nose, joint pain, nasal congestion etc. Intake of vitamin C rich foods strengthens our immune system. Juice of tulsi, ginger & honey is of benefit, tea with added black pepper helps too. Another piece of advice is  making a powder of turmeric, ginger and black pepper and adding it to milk. Boiling neem leaves in water and cleansing your body with this water soothes and cleanse the skin

  • CONJUNCTIVITIS

This contagious disease may be probably a bacterial or viral infection, spreading by sharing personal belongings-towels and clothes. Its commonly referred as ‘Pink Eye’. its marked by swelling eyelids, watery discharge from eyes and redness. As quoted by a yoga expert, splashing cold water in the eyes early morning while holding water in the mouth is very beneficial  to flush off all the bacterias in and around the eye area.Avoiding eye makeup, restraining from contact lens use, washing hands often with soap/sanitiser and avoiding rubbing eyes are few precautions to be followed.
