KARWA CHAUTH FAST: FOR EXPECTING MOTHERS

Just a few days left for the most awaited festival of every married woman, when she observes fast and prays for a long, happy and prosperous life of her husband- Karwa Chauth. This fast begins with the sunrise and ends when the moon spreads its rays on earth. This festival is not just a tradition or a ritual, but it’s the faith of an Indian woman that keeps their husband in a healthy spirit.

But when a mother is expecting, it becomes a dilemma that what to choose- the want of her husband’s well-being, and the healthy growth of the little life in their womb. This emotional choice keeps them in a fix.

For moms-to-be, it is very essential to think practically. So here are a few tips which I would like to recommend to all the pregnant ladies who are reluctant to observe this karwa chauth fast.

  1. Seeking medical advice is a must

No matter what, if you are expecting and are willing to fast, always consult your gynaecologist first. Especially if you are diabetic or have hypertension (i.e. high blood pressure). Eating nothing the entire day might distress the baby as well.

  1. No-food, no-water at all is not recommended

No doctor recommends to observe a fast with no water and no food the entire day. Don’t keep it the way it is expected to be. Have some fruits or juices.

  1. Falahari fast

The fast can be as hindus commonly call it as Falahari, wherein you can and you should have fruits every two hours. This will keep the energy levels stable, doesn’t lead to blood glucose spikes and also prevent acidity, which commonly follows a fasting period.

  1. Stay hydrated

Don't be too reluctant to not sip a drop of water till the moonlight. Keep sipping water. You can have coconut water too that keeps the electrolyte balance stable.

  1. Sargi should have healthy protein

An expectant mother should have the foods high in protein in sargi. Having a big glass of warm milk will also be beneficial. This is because protein keeps us full for a longer time.

  1. Breaking fast the healthy way

This general tip becomes all the more important for a pregnant lady. Avoid high-calorie and fatty, fried foods and those with excess sugar and salt when breaking the fast as this may lead to acidity problem. Begin by hydrating yourself and then having a balanced meal.

  1. Be a bit prepared

Pregnancy increases your eating urges. So even if you have milk and fruits, you may still feel hungry. Be prepared to experience acidity, fatigue, headache, nausea and dizziness. However if these symptoms become severe and unbearable, immediately break the fast and have something.

  1. Distract yourself

Keep your mind distracted. The more you will think about the fast, the hungrier you will feel. Keep the regular routine but avoid any kind of physically draining work.

  1. No tea or coffee

Having tea or coffee in pregnancy can cause gastrointestinal troubles. Also they cause acidity and dehydration. So it’s better to sip juice instead of tea/coffee.

The final word

Your first and foremost priority should be the little one. Only if you have strength, will power and doctor’s consent, go forward with it. Else avoid.

Happy karwa chauth 2018!
